Thoughts on Bird Numbers

Eventually you will come up with a reasonable estimate. What really bugs me is when people put down something like 40+ Coot. What does the plus mean? They had 40 coot but there was more, how many more, 10 more, 50 more, 100 more? Why not just give it your best estimate and be done with it. Yesterday I was out birding and saw 10+ Starlings.

Circular Error Probable (CEP) is the value of the radius of a circle, centered at the actual position that contains 50% of the position estimates. Spherical Error Probable (SEP) is the spherical equivalent of CEP, that is the radius of a sphere, centered at the actual position, that contains 50% of the three dimension position estimates.

Estimated drying times based on a 40' hull would be: Solid hull (no coring) - 20 days. Cored hulls - 40 days. Different types of coring requires different drying times, so these are only rough estimates. My hull was a little less expensive, since it was their first time, and we were at the bottom of the learning curve.

I can further imagine myself in a nice secluded flat water spot, with a buddy boat to make hopefully repeatable wakes, a few two-by-fours, some plastic buckets and the washdown hose to simulate the estimated weight of the proposed project placed at its estimated center of mass -- timing the roll (pitch in my case) period with my watch and using a cheap sailboat

If not, it can be estimated by Keith's formula which comes next. Thus a 40 ft. yacht, estimated to require 20 HP to go 5 kt. with a prop pitch of 8" at 1000 shaft RPM would have a drag of 312.5 lbs. in a 5 kt. current.

[Ontbirds] Adult Pacific Loon - Minet's Point Park, Barrie - 09 Oct 2019
Wed, Oct 9, 2019 5:59 PM
In amongst hundreds of Common Loons (I estimated ~650) out on the bay was one (and possibly two, but never saw two at once) *adult Pacific Loon*, I'm assuming this is the same bird reported by Burke Korol last week. The loons were way out near the middle of the bay and with the east wind it made for a little difficult viewing.

George Petrie calculated an estimated 20% savings for a hypothetical twin diesel. However, all of this is about planing hulls, not displacement trawlers. Thanks for the warning on the rope shaft brake. Unless locking the shaft makes a significant improvement in mpg (I will test with the Floscans) I probably won't bother with it.

Need help from Solomans to Leamington Ontario
Wed, Jul 7, 2004 3:35 PM
I'd estimate needing about three weeks to complete the trip in reasonable weather In a perfect world I'd like someone who could share helm/navigation duties and assist with anchoring and line handling. I would really like to be away from the dock by July 15/04.

Do you have at least an estimate of your fuel usage per mile? We are probably going to make an auto trip next weekend to check out one or two marinas on the Tenn-Tom for possibility of a permanent home for our boat after I retire.
