[Ontbirds] Smiths Longspur - Tips and Decorum
Sun, Jan 1, 2017 8:27 PM
The majority of times however, I've spent more time watching birders than the bird, and myself and a few other 'locals' estimate that around 400 individuals have viewed her. I would like to provide a few observations and tips for those that haven't visited yet, or intend to do so again.

RE: Desiccant Vent Line Filters

The question of how to estimate water infiltration is an interesting one. I leave a boat in Key West over the summer. Last fall when I returned it was most instructive. Both tanks are aluminum and have 200 gal. capacity. The one that was half full with fuel had about 2 gallons of water in the bottom. The one that was empty was dry.

Battery and Inverter Loads

The idea would be to create a simple Excel spreadsheet that you can load, then fill in the blanks by estimating quantity and minutes of use daily for each item. The spreadsheet would then give you a total daily amp/hour load for your boat. To save clutter on the list, email me directly. When I have the spreadsheet finished, I'll post a notice.

While we are on the subject of practicing, it is also worth while to practice estimating distance off by eye and other practical navigational skills, such as using your compass, as well, so that when your radar or GPS fails you have the basic skills to continue.

Many people feel $1K per foot is a good estimate! If the decks are leaking, probably the deck core is also wet and will have to be replaced. If you really want the boat think about ripping the decks off and putting on fiberglass decks, should be much less expensive. Better yet go find another boat to buy!

Your estimate of purchasing a used glass boat is a bit over blown by about a $1,000,000. I'll bet your next boat will be glass. Just think about all that labor of love you will be missing that you enjoy so much. After you buy it please tell me I'm wrong. .

What you see on a Garmin is the EPE (Estimated Position Error). This is a proprietary Garmin parameter for which Garmin declines to provide any technical description. It is known to involve DOP parameters which are based on the geometry of the satellites among other things.

BTW, I was surprised at your estimate of 130 lbs for a 4-D, so I looked it up and you're right! However, I'm 60 and was able to remove all 4 and carry them off the boat and down the deck - one at a time of course - and bring the new ones in without much difficulty. The carry handles make a big difference. BTW, wear old clothes. You WILL get acid on them.
