Shorebirds, Etc. At Port Perry

The birds were quite active, so estimating numbers was difficult, but I found the following shorebirds: Killdeer (50+) Greater Yellowlegs (10+) Lesser Yellowlegs (50+) Solitary Sandpiper (2) Spotted Sandpiper (50+) Least Sandpiper (20+) Common Snipe (1) WILSON'S PHALAROPE (1) Birds were mainly in the second and third lagoons, especially at the south end.

Red-necked Grebe in Muskoka

One "wreck" of Eared Grebes in southern Utah within an 11-day span during bad weather in January 1997 involved the downing of an estimated 35,000 birds (see Auk 116(1): 178-183). Huntsville is located on Highway 11, a 2.5-hour drive north from Toronto via Highways 400 and 11. Novar is a few kilometres north of Huntsville, on Highway 11.

A rough estimate from most of the day coupled with a concerted effort to take a count during the last two hours yielded a conservative tally of 211 hummingbirds for the day.

Early estimates put the Warbler species count at 15+ on the Tip Trails and on the East Side of the Tip. These warblers included Blackburnian, Tennessee, Black-throated Blue, and many Magnolia. Gray-cheeked Thrush were seen in the Tip Area and also on the East side of the Visitor Centre Parking Lot.

[Ontbirds]Pelee Island sighting May 8, 2007

A reverse migration was observed today at Fish Point from at least 8:15 AM until 11 AM observes estimated about 80 birds a minutes flew south off the island. Some of the species participating were more than 200 BLACLBURNIAN WARBLERS many of which flew between observers.

Then out of of the blue, a mass of Bonaparte's Gull came down the river with an estimated 6500 individuals. the total for the flyby was 8825 Bonaparte's Gull and 1 Little Gull.

After circling a few times, it eventually landed near the green buoy in the middle of the river, which we estimated at about 500-600 meters out. It dove several times and we lost the bird on one of the dives. At about 3:15 we left without the bird in sight.

I estimate there were at least 25000 Snow Geese, which were at least 20% blue phase, in the Dunning and Colonial area. On Milton Road we had excellent scope looks at 28 Sandhill Cranes and 3 Cackling Geese. East of Bourget Cobb's Lake (the flood plain) was pretty much reduced to only Cobb's Creek.

There were a record number of Ring-billed Gulls at the dump today with a conservative estimate of 750-1000 plus 2500+ Herring Gulls as well as at least 3 juvenile LBB Gulls. Kirk Zufelt SSM Landfill main dumpsite is an industrial sight and not open to the general public viewing.
