TWL: OpSail 2000 in Tidewater, VA

Dozens of the greatest Tall Ships in the world paraded into Norfolk harbor on Friday, followed by a huge crowd of people (estimates ranged up to 2 million, but I didn't see that many) and thousands of recreational boaters. I have never seen the Elizabeth River so jam packed with boats, from 60+ foot yachts to canoes!

TWL: RE: survey turn around times?

Normally you would review it with the surveyor, perhaps take it to a yard to get an estimate of the dollars involved and then decide is you even want to proceed with the transaction. Then you can approach the broker with an offer (not "my broker" but the seller's broker") based upon your revised evaluation of the vessel.

I then made a revised offer, with all of the defects found on surveys and an estimate to repair such defects. The price was renegotiated. I have followed this proceedure many times and it has worked for me. If the engines had blown up on your boat--would have the broker paid for the rebuilds?--I don't think that he would have.

The financial impact of this plan has been estimated by the FWS to be 43 million dollars a year. That's over 200 million dollars over the five year period and sort of makes the 35 million tax dollars spent in California to save a few Condors seem like pocket change.

It figures in all of the real-time currents predicted along your route at the time you should arrive there, based upon your estimated speed. That sounds great. So I tried it on a route from Ilwaco WA to Neah Bay WA (West coast of Washington State.) and it gave me a departure time of 7:27 AM. That sounded nice.

Re: Cat 3208 TA fuel consumption

If I were to back out the estimated consumption of the generator I feel comfortable saying that each of the Cats burns about 2 GPH at my normal cruising RPM. I hope this info helps with your cruising plans.

Sails on trawlers--My experience
Fri, Apr 29, 2005 4:17 PM
I don't know the overall sail area but estimate it at about 400 square feet. My main is 35' at the truck and the mizzen is 28'. I have played with running the boat up to cruising speed and shutting the engine off with all sail rigged--was able to sustain about 4 knots in fair winds of 15-20.

Controllable Pitch Propellers

I don't have power curves but I would estimate this to be around 25 hp output. This engine would drive my boat to hull speed at around 1700 rpms ( probably around 14 or 15 hp. In real world cruising the average fuel burn was 0.82 gph for a speed of 6.0 knots. Converted to MPG this works out to 7.3 nmpg.

Re: T&T: Toaster Oven

So I'd recommend that you guesstimate how many additional watts you're likely to expend, in addition to the toaster oven, to get a valid estimate of your actual current draw. Of course you can simply turn off AC devices around the boat to conserve the housebank to maximize your cooking time.
