Air Conditioner Replacement

The valve could be replaced, but the estimate of parts labor etc runs around $700.

Hurricane dennis/hurricane mooring
Wed, Jul 13, 2005 10:58 PM
My estimate is that over 70% of the boats anchored in Bayou Chico drug anchor--Many of these were initiated by a poorly anchored boat which tripped the other boat's anchors. The holding there is difficult at best. Ted's comments on full power reverse are very important.

resurrected boats from previous huricanes,
Thu, Jul 14, 2005 2:39 PM
The average yard time for the professional restorations has taken at least twice as long as estimated--and in most cases was much more expensive because of hidden damage. I looked at a number of salvaged boats--some with owners and potential purchasers. Often there was hidden damage not picked up by the surveyors.

Re: T&T: New York hurricane

The report did not estimate casualties, but did state that storms "that would present low to moderate hazards in other regions of the country could result in heavy loss of life" in the New York City area.

Re: T&T: Realistic horse power for boats (was 3160 Cat Diesels and Repowering 20 Ton Boat)

I would estimate that it takes no more than 100 HP to move this boat through the water at 8 knots, a 48 Ft Gulf Commander. I would further submit that a single 120 HP diesel engine would be more than sufficient.

Re: T&T: Issue With Broker and Survey
Thu, Sep 20, 2007 12:07 PM
I personally handed a copy of the survey items to be done to the boat yard foreman (who had made the estimate of repairs) to help insure that only the survey items were to be done. It would be nice to think that I will have some money come back to me, but Im not betting my life on it. A couple points: 1.

Re: T&T: Solar power

I estimate that an average trawler in the 40' range has about 4 square meters atop the pilothouse and possibly 6 square meters on the aft cabin roof for a total of 10 square meters. That assumes that you don't carry a dinghy on the roof. With 10 square meters of area you have space available for 1500 watts.

Re: T&T: Propellers for that 50' trawler
Mon, Feb 18, 2008 4:24 AM
Fuel consumption was estimated on the basis of a 50% efficient prop. In actuality the prop efficiency was closer to 40% and the boat used considerably more fuel than anticipated. My Willard Horizon is 30' LOA and has a waterline of 27.5 ft. It displaces 16,000 lbs.

Re: T&T: Teak deck treatment--SEMCO won

Despite ownership experience with 3 prior boats in this size range, we grossly under-estimated the dollars and work required to bring back a neglected boat.
