TWL: Re: ADAGIO is damaged!
Thu, Nov 4, 1999 5:02 PM
Boat/US estimated $125 million in claims from Floyd! My marina suffered no damage because we added docklines and tended the boats over a 24 hour period. If we did not baby-sit the boats - we would have seen damage too.

I thought this might reduce the original cost estimate. Not so! My efforts must have been a hinderance as the bill ROSE to $50,000. O.K., So now I have a system --sort of. After every day of use, the system failed for a year. We always got service, but "they" could not get anyone here for 2 to 6 weeks.

It does not point where you are going, it just estimates where you might be pointed. The lag is several seconds. The radar shows where you where about 1/10 of a second ago. But the heading marker can fall behind because the radar has to make a revolution to get oriented. The compass has only a degree or 2 of lag and rarely lags enough to be a problem.

I arranged for one contractor to haul the boat, paint the bottom, replace some thru hulls, put in a tranducer, buff and wax the hull and relaunch in an estimated 10 days. This contractor put my requests down on scratch paper.

Then began 2.5 years of full-time work for myself and Susanne until Pooh was launched (original estimate, 12 months after layoff). We have about $85,000 cash, and 9000 person-hours of labor invested in our large but simple dream boat.

You are then in a position to estimate the surface conditions ahead of you. Remember, what you have from the CONDITION reports is a crude picture of reality. To be successful, you have to supplement this information by studying the wave conditions that exist around you in real time.

After a four or five hours observers could see she was floating higher, and with what I would estimate was close to 5,000 HP pulling, off she came late in the day. I was not impressed with the extensive time this operation took.

Measure their height, from that you estimate the DISTANCE they can be seen, making a guess as to the height of the observer on another boat. Observers on larger vessels with their eyes at higher elevations will be able to see you further than smaller boats. ALL of this ignores the candle power or light output.
