You need to use a known calibration source, and build a calibration table over your expected operating parameters.

ruddy turnstones

About 100 Brants in water in front of Chick's, many ring billed gulls and herring gulls--I might estimate that less than 10% of the gulls we saw were very dark feathered overall (juveniles). Also foraging at low tide east of Jimmie's restaurant were 2 young Ruddy Turnstones and 1 sanderling.

LI Sound - Waterbird Paucity?
Tue, Jan 6, 2009 4:08 AM
I recall a report from Long Island of a flock of Greater Scaup estimated to be over 25,000 strong last winter (or the one before) but not on the sound side as I recall. There were some very large flocks of Goldeneye off of Fairfield and Stratford yesterday but a combination of heat haze and distance was working against spotting anything amongst them.

Re: [CT Birds] Scaup +

At the time I was there, I counted 200 Lesser Scaup on a 1,2,3 basis, rather than estimating. They were originally down by the large boat lift at the western end of Captain's Cove (good light angle from Arthur Street) but then moved up to the cove by the intersection of Seabright Avenue and Beacon Street. I missed spotting the Redhead.

big movement
Sun, Nov 1, 2009 8:15 PM
I estimate over 100 plus Junco were on our lawns, but so many more were within the wood edge and pond. Never saw so many at one time before. They were everywhere! Also were many Golden-crowned Kinglet, some BT Green warbs plus 2 Red-breasted Nuthatch and 10 Purple Finch on feeder. Later, a large movement of Robin flew overhead all going EAST!

Stratford Point and Long Beach
Thu, Aug 12, 2010 7:29 PM
A large flock of Semipalmated Sandpipers ( I estimated 1100) flew up from a spot which is just 70 yards or less to the West of the Stratford Point lighthouse. Unfortunately, that spot can't be scoped from the former gun club property, since it is tucked away behind the tip of the point.

I was told that there was an estimated 100 pairs of Common Terns nesting and no Least Terns present on the day in which the string fencing went up. Least Terns had been there earlier, but got washed out.

I wasn't counting but estimate at least 60. The area was still without power which apparently might not be restored until next week. Brenda Inskeep in Stamford

East Shore Park - Warblers
Fri, Oct 7, 2011 6:31 PM
I estimate that there were 200+ warblers present. Many of them were not in the brush line parallel the water treatment plant, but were out in the open trees lining the soccer and baseball fields. I have never seen birds there before.   It was about 75% yellow rumped warblers, with a significant number of palms and blackpolls.
