RE: TWL: Engine rebuild
Thu, Nov 18, 1999 6:40 PM
I've estimated, based on some information gleaned from >the list, that running my engine (rated for 120 hp) in this way, and using 2+ >gallons per hour, means I'm only using 30-40 hp. This doesn't seem like it >qualifies as 'severe service.'

I don't know what the official "wisdom" is on that, but my >experience is that the estimate of 1/2 mile accuracy may be in the ballpark. > >BUT... now that the GPS selective availability is off, I doubt that loran >has an accuracy advantage when it comes to repeatability.

TWL: 44 Atlantic information needed

I'm estimating 2-2.5 gph each at that speed. Reasonable? 2, How will this hull track at 8 kts? 3, Would it be stable at 8 kts, or is it going to roll excessively in beam and following seas? 4, Will it track well with just one engine running at a time? 5, Does it have much of a keel? Deep enough for protection in grounding?

TWL: RE: Racor Fuel/Air Separator

You should be able to estimate how much fuel to take on before you start and use the vent traps to handle mistakes. Ideally they would never be needed. Also, IMHO, sensors, alarms, whistles, etc are of less value. I'd rather PREVENT the spill than be told I now have one to clean up.

TWL: GPS and WAAS
Sun, Aug 19, 2001 2:21 PM
MY Garmin 48, generally shows about 20 feet of estimated precision error(EPE). I take that to mean they are about equal, although my machine does not decode the WAAS signals. A good comparison of WAAS versus a non WAAS equipped machine does not seem to be avialable.

However, I estimated the renovations and conversion costs in each case would run anywhere from $100,000 to $250,000 depending on vessel. On top of the asking price, the total cost didn't look like such a bargain compared to buying a regular yacht in the first place.

Full throttle RPM for this engine is 2500 Cruise should be 1800 for 9 knots, I'm estimating. Does the 30 x 22 wheel seem to be correct? Hal Oakes Traveler, Albin 43 Tenants Harbor, Maine > Hal, > You really need to tell the list what the gear ratio of the tranny is!

TWL: Hurricane Marty tears through Las Paz
Mon, Sep 22, 2003 8:46 PM
Neil Shroyer of Marina de La Paz estimates the winds at 125 knots, and called it a "once every 25 year hurricane." Shroyer has been in La Paz for 38 years, and said there hasn't been anything like Marty since Lisa in '76 - a storm that killed 10,000 in La Paz after an earthen dam broke.

Some want to add on their estimate of shipping for matching a Defender or other mail order price (plus local sales tax, of course). Others will only match "local competition", whatever that means. Mark Richter, Winnie the Pooh not too embarrassed
