TWL: Interesting Comments on GPS
Wed, Jun 18, 2003 12:43 PM
The Garmins would show (estimated position errors) of 26 to 55 feet; the Magellan was stable in WAAS mode, about a 9-foot error. Neither of the two other Garmin e-Trex units could pick-up the WAAS satellites. I suspect the antenna design was (is?) the culprit. >>>>>> Rick Quarles Barric II, Nordic Tug 32-147 New Bern, NC

TWL: Re: Fluid measurement

. >> A problem with Tank Tender type fluid measurement systems, and in fact all measurement systems that measure the fluid height in a tank is that a calibration table of fluid height vs. volume must be made to accurately estimate the amount of liquid remaining.

TWL: RE: Battery specification

I believe batteries are generally rated at below 25 amps, so that the first number would be a conservative estimate of amp-hours.

Winds shifted East to SE with strongest winds estimated at 70 mph. On Friday we found 25 trees down on nearby properties, 63 trees down on our state road. No damage to my home, dock or my nearest neighbors. On river where there were waves many docks destroyed. On South shore of Rappahannock between Stingray Point & Urbanna almost 100% dock destruction.

In my estimation, VE is a much better barrier to water than is epoxy. Back to your question about drying times, I peeled mine in the fall, and allowed it to air dry over a typical northern Maryland winter. Except for one two square foot area it was dry enough to rebuild when the temperatures were warm enough to work the resin.

Seems to me a reconditioned cylinder head would fix any such damage as you describe for about 1/10th your estimated figures. Joe Engel Portland, OR

John Houts I don't want to rain on your parade, but I think your fuel burn estimates on this boat are very optimistic. I just sold a boat , a Vista 43 with twin Cat 3208's with 375 hp that had a loaded weight of about 40,000lbs compared to your boats probable loaded weight of closer to 60,000 lbs.

TWL: Going slowww for fuel savings

Let's say you estimate using 2,500 gallons annually at $1.50 without the conversion. A 20% savings would be 2500 x 1.50 x .2 or $750 savings annually....it would take 3,000/750 or about 4 years to recoup your costs of conversion.... ....plus you won't have any turbo repairs....and maybe you can sell them (two per engine l) on e-bay!!!

Dogs and Heavy Weather

We estimated 7-9 ft. waves. This was totally unexpected as we would have stayed put in the marina. Prediction was 3-4 ft. seas. Sun, our little 12 lb. poodle, planted his feet firmly on the carpet, nails dug in with legs spread wide apart and held on like that while his master went down on his knees twice trying to secure things flying about.
