Re: Navigation (another view)

The degree and minute numbers of a waypoint are easy, and the tenth of a minute input is easy to estimate by the waypoint's position in the square. This makes it very easy to enter several new waypoints on the fly, Nick, after Sherri says she would rather go to St. Michaels instead of anchoring in Queenstown.

Re: Fluid-flow static pressure formula

E.g., how do I estimate the values for 2GPM or less? >7.1 psi for 5/8" ID hose. Would it be too much trouble to give me the formulae you used? Then I will be able to understand the power laws for the various parameters. This reveals another gap in my knowledge. 7.1 psi is equivalent to 16.4 feet of water.

Man-Overboard
Thu, Sep 2, 1999 2:23 PM
After what was estimated at about 20 minutes, the husband returned to the flybridge. Not finding his wife, he looked around the boat thinking she may have moved below and he just missed her. No such luck. Panic set in and he moved to the VHF to put out a call to the fellow boaters and hit the MOB button.

Re: TWL: Re: Hull Speed

Regarding my Nordic Tug, I have studied Cummins's fuel burn curves at given RPM which has Nordic Tug's speed rates overlaid (not very accurate) and have come close to finding efficient points of operation, but there are so many conditions that enter into how efficiently a given hull moves thru the water as to make any estimate with less than a 10% accuracy almost

TWL: Re: Your Perfect Boat -- for when it's over?

For example, I would estimate that the 45' has an A/B of approx. 3.9/1. It should also be mentioned that the minimum freeboard is quite low (1'2" on the 38'). With a couple of exceptions, exploring the west coast of Vancouver Island means exposing oneself to the open Pacific every day and I'm not sure that this is the type of boat for that kind of duty.

TWL: Strange things in the sky

I estimated it to be traveling at about 300-400 mph and I got a very VERY close look at it as it whizzed by. It appeared to be about 20 feet long, maybe two to three feet in diameter and had short stubby wings. I had never seen anything like it in my life. But, whatever it was it came way too close! I immediately contacted Pt.

TWL: Wave shapes ( was: capsize)
Sun, Dec 23, 2001 9:15 PM
The truth is, the classic model used for estimating significant wave height under steady state wind and fetch conditons is based on observation by seasoned skippers. The data was tested in tank testing and apparently held up to scrutiny.

Beside each item, note its amperage requirement and the estimated running time in a 24 hour cruising period, then multiply the two numbers to get amp-hours. (Even though a winch might only run for a few minutes, its draw is quite significant.) Add the amp-hours column, and you know how much you expect to use in a typical day.

TWL: Alabama marine sanitation headaches!

The estimate of pumpouts statewide is 60. Wanna bet how many are working, or in water too shallow to access? This stupid law seems to actually encourage marinas to rip out their pumpouts, so more people can legally dock there. Of course, enforcement is the key, and they don't seem to have the $$ to do that anyway. Another stupid environmental law.

Currently working on a fire damage repair estimate for a trawler with twin TMD40A in the Bay Area, an electrical fire from a yet to be determined source, took out all electrical systems including the engine sensors, control panels and harnesses.
