TWL: Containers at sea
Thu, Nov 20, 2003 7:00 PM
Based (I assume) on insurance claims, ship logs, and other data, it's estimated that about 2000 containers are lost overboard every year, perhaps less. This means that .005 percent of the containers shipped are lost overboard. The report goes on to discuss the probability of containers staying afloat.

Re: TWL: vucu flush

I see no valid reason for owners to avoid flushing TP, but landlubber guests are another matter...they can clog even the best maintained system...in fact, I'd estimate that they're responsible for 90% of clogs.

Also, it's difficult to estimate and get enough premium to cover large, infrequent losses, which is what I would suspect loss activity for this coverage would look like. Here's another consideration. I find it hard to imagine a more diverse small group. On one hand you have very responsible people, and on the other hand you have exactly the opposite.

Re: T&T: Active fin stabilizer

Nordhavn estimated that it knocked about a quarter of a knot off the boat speed during their circumnavigation. For a Nordhavn 40 moving at a speed of 7 knots, the additional drag would amount to about 4 horsepower. Active stabilization in extreme conditions can cost up to 10% in fuel consumption.

If he fails to provide his location you can ask for it and thus get an | accurate estimate of your maximum range.

Cruising Report - Trent Severn Mid and Upper - 7/10/07
Wed, Jul 11, 2007 1:32 AM
Our marina lost power in the afternoon and has an estimate of six hours to get it back up. They are on the end of a very long feeder line. Prop strike story's abound in the Trent this year. And its not just there, boaters trying for gunk holes in the 30,000 islands are bending shafts, props, struts and flat out removing rudders.

LectraScan Battery Usage
Fri, Jul 27, 2007 6:03 PM
Higher frequency usage will require a larger battery, a good rough estimate is the next group size up. A few suggestions for boats with limited battery capacity. Don't use the head to urinate in. Use a bottle and dump several in at one time. If several people want to urinate, one after the other, do so in the head but only flush once.

Here is an estimate I generated this morning for 150 sq ft. The British pound is about $2US, so double the price and add transport.

Estimate to fix the obvious, more than $5000. This engine is 41 years old and I am not sure it is worth repairing.

Anchor Size Recommendations
Tue, Jun 2, 2009 1:34 PM
;-) By my estimate, a 55-pound Rocna--no matter how good it is--is about half the weight you need. And after you get a big, hunkin' anchor, a good, reliable power windlass for dealing with the ground tackle needs to be next on your list. Seriously. One guy's opinion. --Milt Baker, Nordhavn 47 Bluewater, Hampton, VA P.S.
