An estimated 200 CASPIAN TERNS were off Owen Point this week. Two young BARRED OWLS were photographed in Jobes' woods. A MERLIN was seen on Saturday. The HOODED WARBLER discovered in Jobes' woods last week has been heard and briefly sighted several times in the past week, usually in the morning.

Both yesterday and today a flock of BRANT flew past, with estimates of 400 and 40 birds, respectively. The most interesting duck is a male SURF SCOTER that has been off the lighthouse for the past three days. Two HORNED GREBES were in the same general area on Sunday and Tuesday.

Non-raptor Observations: A whopping total of 3430 Ring-necked Ducks were estimated by 10s. Crazy to witness such a flock when they were half in the sky! A late American Golden-Plover was observed flying over the marsh today, and a total of 1383 Horned Larks were counted migrating by.

RE: Selective Availability (S/A)GPS Signal Degradation
Mon, Oct 12, 1998 6:36 PM
So maybe we're wildly inaccurate on our estimates positions, maybe we're 30 feet off. That's still amazing. I don't know why but I would like to hear from others with the latest generation of GPS receivers to see if this is some anomaly or ?? I have no scientific explanation yet and I'm sure not betting my life on this accuracy.

thinking through major repairs
Thu, Dec 3, 1998 8:29 PM
what looked like (from all estimates) a 6 week and $10,000 project has turned into a $30,000+ 6 month project. once we opened the boat up we found far more rot than anyone thought. the curse of the taiwan trawler... there is rot ALL throughout the decks (teak on top of thin glass on top of plywood), all throughout the house, and into the flybridge.

Great Harbour 37

My contract stipulated in part that I would be given "an estimate of any additional building time requirements" on any change order. I was never advised that I was delaying the construction because of change orders. Secondly, I see Mr. Ficketts viscous and blatant attempt to intimidate me to be his method to effectively negate the warranty problems.

TWL: Re: Unburnt fuel in exhaust
Wed, Nov 3, 1999 12:21 AM
I would recommend a 15w40 while the estimable Mr. Smith at American Diesel prefers a straight 30. >The engine produces a very small amount of bluish smoke while warming up, and no smoke when >warm. Blue smoke indicates that you are burning (or trying to burn) lube oil.

TWL: Engine rebuild
Tue, Nov 16, 1999 5:33 PM
Estimated cost of removing and rebuilding the two engines: $34K. The engines only have 2400 hours on them: they should have been good for well over 10000 hours. Everybody has unconfirmed theories on why they failed: previous owner didn't break them in properly, the engines had overheated, the rings carboned up, she wasn't run hard enough, etc.
