Re: TWL: 6 Volt Batteries and Amps

I thought this might reduce the original cost estimate. Not so! My efforts must have been a hinderance as the bill ROSE to $50,000. O.K., So now I have a system --sort of. After every day of use, the system failed for a year. We always got service, but "they" could not get anyone here for 2 to 6 weeks.

It is estimated that I will run each 44 gallon (too small!) tank through the filter 3 times, changing rolls each time. Then I sally forth and seek out wakes and 4 foot waves on the Chesapeake too stir up the stuff in the tanks - and change rolls again. An ineffective visit by a good fuel cleaning company cost me $250.

TWL: Skooch's 2nd trip

One of the listees would estimate the cost of this as one boat unit. Once we locate Bennett Bay on the blinky box and get the life raft checked its on to a friends house nestled on the beach near the Frenchman's reef resort for dinner. Then its off to the BVIs for snorkel and diving.

Re: TWL: Worst Boating Adventure of the Year

We had the engine worked on--three times as much cost as estimated (but that is par). Then the engine would not go to WOT--they forgot to put some piece into the turbo! I had the fuel polished, but the engine would still stall at 80% throttle. Diagnosis was old fuel, so we set off, with half a tank of old fuel.

Sorry, I am not yet digital photo capable, but I'll be sure to give my estimate of the performance results after May 8 when we leave the dock here in Palm City, where we're housesitting. Before haulout, Pooh's speed at 1800rpm was 7.3 kts, and max RPM 2250. After haulout and wing addition, we make 7.6 kts at 1800, and max out at 2325 rpm.

TWL: Re: Exhaust elbow fabrication

Calder says that these have a 5 to 8 year life and my experience confirms this estimate. The problem is quickly locating a replacement elbow for a 25 year old, out of production engine. Fortunately it is possible to fabricate a pretty good exhaust elbow for most engines out of standard plumbing parts in a couple of hours.

Finally, before you go back to the buyer/broker get a very rough estimate from a local boatyard to fix deficits your surveyor found. Now you have a dollar figure, albeit very rough, from which to negotiate. Beware if the owner offers to fix the deficits. At least any serious deficits.

"estimated price based on survey results, which can be adjusted up or down." Yea, like somebody is going to sign THAT one. All kinda makes me wonder what the use is in signing a contract anyway, since the seller can just walk away at any time for no reason.
