The Oregon Coast in Winter

I estimate 200,000 pots from San Francisco to Cape Flattery, maybe 300. The crab free tow boat lanes have not always been crab pot free. If there is the usual crowding then some crabbers will be forced to put their pots in the lanes, even though they have no recourse with the tow boat operators when their crab gear is damaged.

Re: T&T: Just Another Day In Paradise

Sterling estimated that Monk probably weighed about 800 pounds, using the rule that they go about 100 pounds a foot. They are gentle giants. It is the unusual sights of cruising that make it so fascinating, especially those having to do with nature. Across the canal, an iguana that is at least 6 feet long perches on a davit base and suns itself each day.

Re: T&T: Nobeltec and other choices

When it comes to Nobeltec, I only use its tides and currents data to get a general quantification as to likely direction, estimated slack and small, medium or big currents at other times, but don't trust the details for actually navigating any potentially dangerous area. That's what eyeballs are for.

Incident on the Pongo River
Fri, Oct 22, 2010 12:12 AM
I estimate our roll at at least 20-25 degrees. Everything that was not tied down went to the starboard side of the boat and lots of little trinkets and souvenirs were destroyed.

Improbable voyages - Trawler circumnavigation 3

The new fuel consumption estimate is 15.5 NM per gallon or only 1548 gallons. If we go with the 2000 gallons, we will have reserve fuel for unanticipated conditions. Alternatively, we can decrease the length of the boat to 30 ft. LWL. ?Maybe we can even take a case of beer for an Equatorial celebration.

How one trawler should tow another
Thu, Jul 23, 2015 5:01 AM
Don't trust other people's estimate of the strength of their mooring gear. Even with the bridle Rick described, I have often had trouble as I started a tow, because of the torque of a single prop, which would pull the towing vessel to one side.

Re: T&T: AIS transmit, on or off
Thu, Nov 12, 2015 6:42 AM
I will concede that, though I’m as proficient as anyone at identifying a collision course while watching over a few minutes, my visual estimation of both time and distance is embarrassingly poor. This might be why I got comfortable so much more quickly with AIS and ARPA technology compared to my husband.

Re: T&T: Florida Anchoring and Mooring Outlook

By contrast, there are only three major marinas hereabouts, and I would reasonably estimate there are well less than a thousand wet slips amongst them. There are around 25-30 active members in our Panama City Coastal Cruiser Club, and we kind of have a clue about non-member locals who may cruise their boats (darned few).

Re: [OpenSCAD] Difference between modelling with Openscad and Freecad

In the case of intersection and difference, the bounding box is an estimate (the true bounding box might be smaller), but in other cases, the bounding box is exact. In practice, it is these "other cases" where the bounding box is most useful, so it doesn't matter that the bounding box is sometimes an approximation.

Re: [USRP-users] Question on Feasibility of Dual N210s for Data Sharing/Processing
Thu, May 10, 2012 6:00 PM
Not knowing a thing about your application area I'm not sure of the kinds of processing you're interested in.The N210 has a lot of spare DSP/logic capacity remaining even with the full Ettus design resident, it should be a quite reasonable task to estimate who much you can achieve with it before being forced to overflow into a second N210.
