Re: TWL: Re: Bad weather and safety at sea

I estimate that it was 20 feet high, but it sure looked higher. I reached shore five hours later. The water was 55 degrees. My advice, stay in the marked ship channel if the tide is ebbing and there is ANY sea swell. Re: T&T: Driveline cost comparison

The price of the hydraulic drive is unlisted, but I estimate that the cost of better quality components from a supplier like McMaster to be in excess of $3000, probably closer to $4000. The price of an electrical drive is $7700. An additional traction battery for short periods of powering without running the engine is $597.

KATU - Catamaran washes ashore, crew missing
Sun, Dec 17, 2006 3:47 AM
Based on wind and wave numbers from the buoys off Cape Blanco and Stonewall bank, I estimate the boat went over sometime between 0300 and 1200 on Dec 11, somewhere between Coquille River and Coos Bay. This is only an educated guess. Conditions peaked around 0900 on that date in that area with 30+ foot seas.

We also estimate the current speed by subtracting 'how fast we should be going' at a certain RPM but once in a while we put it in neutral and let the current take control and see what the GPS says our SOG is. I have never seen more than 3 knots.

Do not go to Stuart Boat Yard with Greg unless you want to work with no estimate and be surprised.
