Re: [time-nuts] Misuse of word "decimate" (was Re: Short term 10MHz source)

Sure, but decimation methods may be applicable to estimate a good value for it. It is not always needed, for sure, but this is one of the cases you want to do one of them and others the others. Cheers, Magnus

Re: [time-nuts] Are minutes more important in astronomy than seconds and hours ?
Sat, Nov 23, 2019 1:27 PM
Hours last too long and estimating minutes from the hour hand is minimally useful while seconds are too fast and mostly irrelevant for human use. Reading the time as so many minutes past whichever hour is very natural and informative.

ebird, but am not a CTBirds subscriber): A Bedford Audubon Society (New York) field trip to the Broad Brook area yesterday (Sat. 11/10), manged to locate the previously reported Barnacle Goose at Broad Brook Millpond in Broad Brook, along with 7 Greater White-fronted Geese (4 ads., 3 juvs.), at least one Cackling Goose, 2 Brant, and a Snow Goose, along with an estimated

My best estimate - not to be relied on - was that it was an Eastern Wood Pewee. I also had a close encounter with a female Pileated Woodpecker working on a fallen log, and surprisingly good looks at a Louisiana Waterthrush. Roy Harvey Beacon Falls, CT

Little Blue Heron

It was hard to tell but I would estimate that at least half of the questionable birds were im. Little Blues and not Snowys.     This group has flown into the marsh just about everyday at or shortly after daybreak and leaves as the sun is setting. It would be interesting to note when the Little Blues are being seen in Westbrook.

Connecticut River Swallows

I estimated 250,000 in my eBird submission, but it may have been many more. I have seen reports of 300,000 to 500,000. It was a spectacular sight. I was the only birder on our boat, and the non-birders were even more impressed than I with the event. Good birding. Howard Patterson Ellicott City, MD 410-736-3064

Edgewood Park Rusty Blackbirds

On the basis of not seeing any other blackbirds in the flock, particularly redwings, which are frequently seen here, I estimate a total of 80 altogether. Full report on ebird. Also, a Cooper’s Hawk perched nicely on a tree next to Whalley Ave. Did not see the Red-headed Woodpecker at Bradley & Lincoln from 3:50-4:20 pm. Larry Bausher West Haven

The estimate is probably low because I can't keep track of numbers while I am enjoying the birds. Also big numbers of male and female Common Yellowthroats, about 25+. In addition, Magnolia, Wilson's, and Yellow Warblers. The amazing thing was that all were seen at eye level, many only 10 feet from me.

Robins, Siskin and more...
Tue, Feb 9, 2016 11:06 PM
In total, I would estimate I saw over 2,000 Robin, and probably more cuz I stopped counting. I also had on Buell rd on a home site that had lots of young White Birch, 25 Pine Siskin eating the Catkin cones. The Robins were eating the abundant crab apples, and berry bushes loaded with berries seen everywhere.
