TWL: Re Partial Panic mode
Sat, Aug 23, 2003 2:58 PM
My estimate of November 1 is really a worse case scenario. I am hoping for October 1. Shakedown is not as big an issue with me as most people. The boat is not going to be complicated, I am very mechanically inclined and I will not be very far from shore. I can easily put an outboard bracket on the boat for auxiliary power if I don't trust the engine.

TWL: Re: Speed formula

I can see how you calculated the recommended HP (430000/500), but there is obviously something else to the formula used to estimate hull speed, since the square root of 39 is not 8.4. Could you supply the formula for this, and also for the second set of calcs on displacement hulls, please?

My end goal is to be sure that I don't under estimate the needs of the 'house' and to make sure I have ample battery power for the needs. I thought I understood this pretty well, and now I'm beginning to think I was wrong. Thank God for generators. Dan Lanier Melbourne, FL danlanier@earthlink.net

I would estimate that the float density has tripled or even quadrupled in that time. There is no such thing as a float free channel like we enjoy here in Maryland. In fact the channels seemed to be the most dense areas. Christmas cove near the mouth of the Damariscotta River was almost blocked with floats.

Re: T&T: Wind generators

I would estimate that the average generated power was less than 50 watts. Eventually we got tired of the complexity and the noise and replaced it with a solar panel. The trade off is that the wind generator will produce power at night and in cloudy weather, the solar panel will produce power in the daytime and in calm wind conditions. Larry Z

Re: T&T: Primary Purpose of Complex E-Charting ?

For me using the CAPN meant I never got lost and could always estimate my arrival with great precision. I don't worry about buoyage systems changing because I plot my routes ahead of time. My tracks in the Bahamas are very useful, especially out where the dragons live (XXX on the charts).

Re: T&T: Water Tanks

We have a fairly large manufacturer of plastic tanks in the area however they wnat an exact replica of what I need, probably in wood, so that they can "attempt" to warp their moulds to fit my needs, The starting cost estimate was in the order of $700 to $1000 for a 100 gal tank.

The offset could also be estimated in the user receiver by "spending" just one satellite observation. The accuracy of the receiver solution would probably be higher than the one (eventually) transmitted. Thus, broadcasting might not be necessary for the general navigation user.
