Sunrise Birding Walk - Wesport/Southport
Sat, Mar 1, 2008 8:46 PM
Also off of Compo were huge rafts of ducks including many hundreds if not thousands of Common Goldeneye, Oldsquaw and Greater Scaup (I was reading of a Greater Scaup flock off of NY a week or so back that totaled an estimated 25,000 birds).

Common Nighthawks
Sun, Aug 31, 2008 9:54 AM
Estimated 500 COMMON NIGHTHAWKS..... but could have been far more than that between 6:45 and 7:30. Note, while others have been noting the lower numbers of Common Nighthawks than usual, I've had my usual passage of a dozen or two here and there each evening since the 20th or so.

Windsor Gulls
Fri, Jan 2, 2009 9:18 PM
Probably double the number of gulls that were there last week (~1500, but I'm a poor estimator). Aside from the Iceland Gulls I did have a few funky birds, including a flyover of a first-cycle Thayer's candidate, but unfortunately I wasn't able to relocate it.

Stratford scoter numbers
Sat, Feb 7, 2009 8:10 PM
The estimate may actually be low, since the rest of the line was denser in spots than the section in which I actually counted one by one.

Blackbird Insanity Stratford

My conservative estimates, with the aid of my camera, were 150 Common Grackles, 225 Cowbirds, and 325 Red-winged Blackbirds. Many more birds were in the trees and still coming into the area.

Re: [CT Birds] Red-Winged Blackbirds

I couldn't get a count if I wanted - they kept moving and flying off - I'd estimate 200 individuals and pretty evenly split amid the two species. A Red Shouldered Hawk was nearby so I am sure these smaller birds were aware and nervous with its presence.

Hammo Snow Geese Continue
Tue, Mar 10, 2009 2:50 PM
We saw them Sunday at 5:00 and again on Monday and today within a few yards of the same place which I estimate to be about 500 ft out in the marsh.  They can be seen best from the easternmost trail on Willards Island and a scope is suggested (although I have not used one). Dean Rupp Killingworth

Penfield Reef Iceland Gull, Longspur, tons of Scaup

-- a rough estimate, a band of scaup all the way from Seaside Park in Bridgeport to the reef thousands strong.

1500-2000 White-winged Scoters near Wellington
Thu, Oct 3, 2002 7:15 PM
En route we estimated about 1500-2000 White-winged Scoters on the water. They were in small - medium sized flocks ( up to 100 birds) and most were closer to Wellington than to Scotch Bonnet but birds were visible throughout the trip...we were usually with 1-2 km off the north shore of the lake (Ontario) at that point.

RE LOGGERHEAD SHRIKES.
Sun, Mar 14, 2004 12:51 AM
There are approximately 10,000 Tundra Swans off Greenway Rd. and spread around the same area are an estimated 1,000 LAPLAND LONGSPURS, many in almost full breeding plumage. The Swans are just off Highway 21 about 8 miles South of Grand Bend and behind The Lambton County Museum.
