Re: T&T: live aboard costs

I still think the $80K+ estimate is better for a boat that large and that old used for serious cruising. Personally, I think that number's still got a lot of risk built in. What kind of boat are you looking at?

Re: T&T: Navigation computer reliability

The military has learned that parts count provides a good estimate of equipment reliability. What ain't there can't go wrong. So keep things simple and provide a backup for any critical function. Making a high reliability navigational system is easy if you go about it the right way.

Re: T&T: Solar Panel R&D

This amount may vary depending on the age and quality of the battery but 1% is a good estimate. If you have a 200 amp hour battery, the solar panel will have to provide at least 2 amp hours per day to keep a fully charged battery topped up.

Sailboat to trawler transition

Having a chart plotter doesn't mean I have given up the satisfaction of plotting the course on my paper charts, calculate set and drift, estimating TOA at various points, and having the thrill of hitting it right on the nose. The challenge is still there, just in smaller doses.

Re: T&T: Twins fuel burn

I recalculated using .6 GPH for the genset and came up with 4.25 GPH for the twin CAT's ....mileage is probably less accurate as I estimate the daily mileage for my log. but using the GPH burn rate at 8 knots / 9 mph it's still a respectable 2.1 mpg, also, maybe adjusting for idle speed and using 8 mph, it would be 1.9 mpg. so....Two miles per gallon is a

Maybe Arild can check this estimate. On the other hand, I have never seen a commercial front opening fridge with adequate insulation. The manufacturer is marketing interior volume and must decrease the insulation thickness to maximize this.

Re: T&T: twin engines pro and con

I well remember a delivery up the California coast of a 60-foot ChrisCraft with BIG twin Detroits in fourteen foot seas (weather center estimates, not mine) when both engines began to surge due to fuel filter clogging (luckily, a safe haven was close by).

Re: T&T: diesel tank repair
Sat, Jul 28, 2018 2:35 PM
After getting $20K estimate from two boatyards (which involved removing rear sliding glass door, dinette and galley, AC, floor panels, engine and transmission and then remove leaking tank and replace all), I decided to cut the 100 gallon tank into pieces and install a smaller Moeller poly tank. Bought a Makita 10 gauge Nipper and a Kobalt skilsaw.

Take a look at the surrounding interfacing logic and estimate what logic depth it has before you reach a register to see if it's appropriate to add further registers. Does your block directly interface with FPGA pins?
